Lemon Mint; Monarda
citriodora
Photo by Larry Allain @ USDA-NRCS Plants Database
A member of the Mint family (Lamiaceae) this annual is
decorated with two or more “terraces” of showy purple and green bracts
(modified leaves). The flowers on
this plant are more obvious than those of the Indian Paintbrush, but are
relatively small and light yellow to cream colored.
The Lemon mint or lemon beebalm may grow to be 2.5 feet tall. It
is often found in large stands along well-drained hillsides across Oklahoma.
