Color Oklahoma Plantings

Since 2003, Color Oklahoma – Sow Some Wild Seeds has been a leader in beautifying Oklahoma’s roadsides.  Thousands of native wildflowers bloom across the state thanks to Oklahomans who buy the Color Oklahoma state license tag, buy Color Oklahoma t-shirts and tote bags, and have raised money to qualify for our matching grants.

Our largest contributor has been the Public Service Company of Oklahoma which for three years has enabled us to add wildflowers on highway rights-of-way near Lawton, Oologah, Tulsa and Bartlesville.

In 2003 wildflower seeds were sown along I-40 near Seminole and Henryetta.  In 2004 seeds were sown along the Creek Turnpike in south Tulsa, and Interstate-40 at Elk City, Clinton and near Erick.

In 2005, wildflowers seeds were sown in mid-town Tulsa, near Bartlesville and along Interstate 40 at Sallisaw, the state Information Center and the Arkansas-Oklahoma state line.

In 2006, Color Oklahoma began offering matching grants to individuals and groups throughout the state.

 The winners:

2006 -- Riverfield Country Day School in Tulsa, Let Turley Bloom in Tulsa County, Choctaw County Arts Council and Iris Garden Club, the City of Edmond, Hennessey 2010 Beautification Committee, Piedmont Kiwanis Club and Lawton Beautiful.

2007 – Williams Landscape of Randlett, Muskogee County 4-H, Ardmore Beautification Council, Cameron University Biology Club, City of Weatherford, Susan Hill and Jeannie Ho Coley of Norman and the Oklahoma City University Department of Biology.

2008 – The City of Weatherford, the Delaware Nation at Anadarko, a Tulsa couple and the City of Enid.

In 2009, Color Oklahoma provided seeds which the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority planted along the Kilpatrick Turnpike, near Arcadia Lake on the Turner Turnpike, and near Chickasha on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike.

The most popular and best performing species are Black-eyed Susan, Indian Blanket, Indian Paintbrush, Plains Coreopsis, Prairie Coneflower, Purple Coneflower, Clasping Coneflower, Lazy Daisy, Lemon Mint, Missouri Primrose and Tickseed.

Sites for the 2010 fall sowing will be selected in August.
